Tried and True Play Dough Recipe

By Alli Wilber November 3, 2018

Play dough is always an activity that wins over my kids when we are looking for something to do inside, as well as  at home.  While you can buy the store bought containers, making your own play dough is a fun way for your kids to see how its made and be a part of making it.

Here is our tried and true recipe:

  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 1 Cup Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons of Cream of Tartar
  • 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Cups Boiling Water

*Optional:

  • Food Coloring
  • Essential Oils

Directions:

  1. In a large pot, add 2 cups of water and set to medium high heat
  2. Combine the first 4 ingredients together in a bowl
  3. Once the water is boiling, remove from heat and add the flour mixture to the pot of water and stir.
  4. Mix until well combined
  5. Store in an air tight container for up to a year.

* Adding food coloring and essential oils to your play dough makes it more stimulating. I like to divide it up into 4 equal parts and add different colors and oils to each.

Thats it! Really simple, minimal clean up and keeps the kids entertained for a while!

Enjoy!
