Cold Weather Activities

Keep your kids entertained when your stuck inside on a cold winter day!

By Alli Wilber - Macaroni Kid Greeley January 5, 2019

Colorado has some pretty mild winters compared to other parts of the country, making it easy to get outside nearly every day. However, when it gets cold, it can take your breath away!

It can be hard when the kids are stuck inside, and as moms, we have to get creative so no one goes stir crazy! Keeping everyone entertained is a lot easier said than done! Over the last 5 years of my motherhood journey, with all boys I might add, I have come up with a few unique, in-home activities that might help you to channel the extra pent up energy the kids have built up.

Cooking/Baking - I don’t know about your kids, but my kids LOVE helping me in the kitchen! Pouring, mixing, measuring, taste testing, they love it all! Find an easy recipe they can help with and get the kids cooking! They might even eat their dinner if they had a hand in making it. :)

Water Beads - I found these on Amazon a few months ago and I was skeptical even though they had outstanding reviews. I finally bought some and with 2 Tbls of dried water beads, 1/4 C water and 8 hours to let them absorb ( definitely do this the night before they want to play) my boys were entertained at the kitchen table for the afternoon. We added cups, spoons, and animals for extra fun.

Legos - Need I say more? I mean, who doesn’t love these things? The lego possibilities are endless!

Dance Parties - Sometimes when my boys are bouncing off the walls I will turn on some music and we show off all of our dance moves. You will be guaranteed a laugh!

Build a Fort - My kids LOVE forts! Even if it is as simple as a blanket thrown over the coffee table. Something about their own little private enclosure can entertain them for a while!

Obstacle Course - Get creative with this! I have used masking tape on the floor to create a line they had to walk, crawling under a row of chairs, hopping from one spot to another. Channel your inner Ninja Warrior!

Book Reading Marathon- Read!! Kids love books! Don’t be surprised if they want to read the same book over and over and over again! :)

Here are a few more indoor activities that your kids might enjoy:

- Coloring

- Board Games

- Card Games

- Play Dough ( check out my awesome recipe for homemade play dough HERE)

- Bubble Bath

- Movie Marathon

- Exercise

- Scavenger Hunt

- Crafts

- Facetime a Friend!

Being stuck indoors doesn't need to drive everyone crazy. You just need to get creative!
